Fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) at a
private facility in California
The Fishing cat is considered Endangered by the
IUCN Cat Specialist Group. Populations are in
decline throughout its geographic range. Until
recently, Sumatra was believed to be a stronghold
of the Fishing cat. Jim Sanderson has shwon that
the Fishing cat has not occurred in Sumatra in
historical times. This significant find calls attention
to the need to confirm the continued known
existence of the Fishing cat, a recognized
subspecies, in Java. The last lives Fishing cat in
Java was killed by a hunter in 1932. Since then,
the fishing cat has not been seen. Has the Fishing
cat in Java gone the way of the Javan tiger without
anyone noticing? We need to know the present
status of the Fishing cat in Java.
Jim Sanderson and his Indonesian colleague seek funding for camera traps to survey for the
Fishing cat in Java. Time is of the essence.
